Madre Mare

The thought that everything started from "Sea" can be seen as double image of a notion of "Mother" that is a rise of every life.
Space beyond time and a foundation of nature that arises from repetition are metaphors of art itself.
Although "Mother" has a primitive power and a cosmic feeling, she is "present", "reality" and "human being" as an individual existence. Every life that arises from her wonders toward/beyond horizon as if a girl-shaped illusion.
My recent work has started from a black painting, and is now changing to a landscape that is seeking for light. Girls sift from static to active status as they hold a possibility of becoming mothers in themselves. For me, paintings are repetition of "time", and those are not something to be created but arise.
Leiko Ikemura

We would like to inform you of a new solo show for Leiko Ikemura at SHUGOARTS.
For this artist, who has moved to Europe in 1972 and is still living and working based in Germany, it has been three years since she had the last solo show in Japan. We are going to present you six paintings, one bronze sculpture, and some drawings. Ikemura works on motif of girl figures with paintings and sculptures. She applies many layers of color on jute fabric.
The paints, which are deeply permeated in the picture, slowly exude the colors and captivate viewers. Bleary silhouettes with a floating feeling, have a tactile sense, and they let us feel a strong presence that exists in girls or human beings.
The title for this solo show, "Madre Mare", means "Mother" and "Sea" in Italian. Both "Mother" and "Sea" indicate a root from where all living creatures arise. The artist seems reexamining the truth and mystery that are relating to life of human beings and all creatures as she applies colors to her canvas.
Please enjoy the world of Ikemura Leiko, which touches on a gulf of life with a feeling that is free from the real world time-line.
