SHUGOARTS presents a solo show by Yukio Fujimoto. The artist was born in Nagoya in 1950, and he graduated from Osaka University of Arts in the faculty of music in 1975. Based on speculation about relationship between music and hearing, he creates art pieces that associate with sound, object, word, and smell, as well as at Japanese pavilion in Venice Biennale in 2001, where he created an intellectual installation that transformed the space with sound. In the contemporary art world, he has been a very unique artist with his attitude that treats sound as physical substance. Recently, he has been exhibiting many art pieces that offer audience places of tangible experiences on sense of perception and recognition of human beings.
This "Philosophical Toy (II)" is a part of series of art shows that had a primal exhibition in Osaka in 2001. Originally the artist created those small objects in his room, without a particular plan of showing them to the public... Those objects were like notations of his thoughts, something came up to his mind while he was reading, and models for his shows. While he was looking at these objects, which were as if existing in between thoughts and material, eventually some objects remained in him with a strong presence. Those objects are made out of daily commodity with slight twists. There are the meanings that can be discovered only by making a little off from their original purpose. The artist called the objects, "Philosophical Toys".
When I started working on sound objects, people used to say, "those objects look like toys". Although some people said it with disdain, it made me happy vaguely.
I rather consider my art pieces as "implements". And they are very simple implements.
For implements, it is very important how people use them.
It is same as toys that they can be changed by how people play with them. Toys that make people think a little "philosophically".
I need time to confront such things.
And I believe there are people who need such time like me.
Yukio Fujimoto
The artist has kept Marcel Duchamp's words in his mind: "Artists create half of the art pieces, and viewers create the other half". Therefore, for the artist, "People who need such time like me" means that the viewers who meet the "implements". When you meet the art world of Yukio Fujimoto through the "implements", viewers will find an entrance for the other world that covertly exists in the daily life.
Additionally, we would like to inform you about a performance event by the artist from 17:00 on 10th, the first day of the exhibition. Also, a talk show by the artist will be on the following day, 11th, at the gallery.
