SHUGOARTS is pleased to exhibit a show of new works by Toeko Tatsuno. Tatsuno was born in Nagano Prefecture in 1950, and graduated from M.A. course in Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. In 1984, she was in a group show called "Metaphor and/or Symbol" at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and The National Museum of Art, Osaka, as well as The 22nd Bienal de Sao Paulo in 1994. In 1995, with her exhibition "Toeko Tatsuno 1986-1995" she became the first female and also the youngest artist to have a solo show at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. In 1996, she received an art award for new artists from Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan. She has been energetically working as an artist in her quest for the enchantment and potential within painting, and showing her new pieces yearly at Shiseido Gallery as a 5th Tsubaki-Kai member since 2001.
Tatsuno paints with rich colors that give very much depth to organic forms... these forms give the appearance of representation but are actually indefinable images. She says she is not painting forms that evoke specific things, neither are they totally abstract. Things that attract little attention in everyday life, positional relationship between objects and their heights, bumps and dents or hollow, unnatural lights... those futile "objects" that can't presumably be the subject matter of painting. Tatsuno sustains such transformation from "objects" to "things" on her canvases with her unique painting method, she produces extraordinary space with multidimensionality in paintings.
Although people tend to look for hidden narrative not only in paintings but also in many expressive forms, Tatsuno says nothing is hidden behind her paintings. Layered multidimensional spaces that are created with opposing colors and lines. Paintings that are created by addressing "things that can only expressed in paintings", always give us fresh visual pleasure and offer us a unique presence of painting.
There are new paintings and prints in this solo show. It is her first solo show in a gallery for four years. We sincerely hope you will visit and enjoy Tatsuno's new works show at SHUGOARTS.
