Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere
One day, I thought that if I became Santa Clause in the warm season, I had to feel like I was in southern hempisphere country that had Christmas in the warm season.
It was sprin, and I became Santa Clause in the vacant lot near the ocean, through which the train passed.
I was the Santa Claus whom you could glimpse from the train window, but could not look back and gaze at. The glimpse of me was the event that wouldd linger in your mind, because of its momentary impression.
from SHIMABUKU "Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere" 1994, Shioya, Kobe
We are pleased to announce that the up-coming group show entitled gsummer showh at SHUGOARTS. We are going to present art pieces by Yukio Fujimoto, Naofumi Maruyama, Shimabuku, and Sislej Xhafa. Every artist suggests different viewpoints, feelings of ordinary things or events through their art pieces.
Yukio Fujimoto combines ready-made articles from daily life and produces art works that make us feel like our senses stretched out. On this occasion, we are going to present Fujimotofs gROOMh that was exhibited at Venice Biennale, as well as a yet-to-be-exhibited art work after three years of production process.
Naofumi Maruyama brilliantly depicts landscapes that seem familiar to us but nowhere with technique called gStainingh. There will be paintings and drawings that seem like extracted scenes of the summer.
SHIMABUKU suggests a method of new communication and relationship based on occurrences in his trips or everyday life. His "Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere" and other works are going to be presented.
Sislej Xhafa, from Kosovo, picks up everyday sceneries to cast us questions about social issues with a touch of humor. His photo works and a fake gold hammock are going to be exhibited.
Although time passes quickly in the summer, if you allow yourself to spend some time to appreciate art works, you might be able to find something that you normally overlook.
