Shugoarts is pleased to announce the show of Tomoko Yoneda Monochrome Works 1996-2003.
Yoneda was born in Akashi, Hyogo in 1965 and now lives and works in London. She obtained BFA from The University of Illinois at Chicago in 1989 and MA from the Royal College of Arts in 1991.
Primarily concerned with tracing history, sometimes real and sometimes imagined, Tomoko yoneda photographs landscapes, interiors and people. She does not just visually document the subject but weaves a thread which allows us to experience the image beyond what we actually see.
In her earlier series Topographical Analogy, she introduced various objects into the picture plane to stir our imagination and create a fictional history of the space. Viewers are left to construct there own meaning from the elements in the image. Yoneda also photographed heat marks on walls and peeling wallpaper in soon-to-be demolished houses which become both manifestations of time and a reminder of the former inhabitantsf histories.
Between Visible and Invisible represents unique perceptions of major intellectual and political figures of the twentieth century such as Freud and Trotsky. Key objects that helped shape the work of these people are viewed through the their actual eyeglasses. Between Visible and Invisible refers to the correlation between the image on the surface (the visible) and the unknown narrative beneath the surface (the invisible) which when revealed changes the context of the photograph.
After the acclaimed solo show, Beyond Memory and Uncertainty, at Shiseido Gallery in 2003, she has exhibited widely. In 2005, she had two major solo shows in Japan; A Decade After at Ashiya City Museum of Art & History on the tenth anniversary of the Kobe earthquake, and After the Thaw at Shugoarts where she created a poetic visual essay based on the political upheaval and oppression in the former communist countries of Hungary and Estonia.
She has also participated in Yokohama 2005: International Triennale of Contemporary Art and will show in Berlin-Tokyo/Tokyo Berlin exhibition at Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin and Photo España 2006. Recently Tomoko Yoneda was awarded the IPRN photographic prize and will be artist-in-residence at Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea,Cinisello Balsamo, Milan.
