SHUGOARTS is pleased to present the solo exhibition of 29 year-old painter, Mitsuhiro Ikeda.

In the same way that myths arise when the stars that dot the sky are connected and constellations are born, seek out the stars in the air around you, and understand the possibility that something may be born.
In all the spaces we inhabit, there are things that if you touch them they join together with your touching, such as sensations, emotions, reason and images. They are not necessarily things we find in the layer of images that houses our past memories; they are sometimes completely new. And in order to notice them, and face them, it is necessary to return to the original act of touching, and build from there an entirely new space.
Mitsuhito Ikeda

Gazing at the painterly spaces created by Ikeda – with their numerous worlds folded and layered into a single frame, and which draw the viewer deep and deeper into their depths – is like peering through a window onto part of an infinite universe. Wanting to transfer the feelings he experienced to the canvas, the artist elaborately constructs his complex, mysterious structure of sensations through a process of layering thick undercoat and sparkling paint. The resulting landscape is somehow futuristic, and yet at the same time it is a memory landscape, nostalgic – as though youfve seen it before. Viewers are made to experience the joy of the senses, and their own internal stories and memories are awakened. Ikeda, through his painting, is stepping to the very core of creativity, and in the grand cycle of reciprocated ggiving and takingh he is attaining a world of expression that remains fresh even as the times continue to change.

Ikeda was born in Hokkaido in 1978. In 2006 he graduated from the Graduate School of Art and Design, Musashino Art University, with a Masters degree in painting. In 2005 he received First Prize at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art gNew Art Competition.h In 2007 he was awarded VOCA Second Prize at gVOCA 2007h at the Ueno Royal Museum. With works included in collections such as UBS Bank Art Collection, Lehman Brothers, Dai-ichi Mutual Life Insurance Company and others, at the young age of 29 Ikeda has already garnered plaudits from both at home and abroad. Please come and enjoy this exhibition by one of the most exciting young artists working today, in his first solo show at Shugoarts.

Ikeda is also participating in the exhibition gBorn in HOKKAIDO: Fruit of the Earth, Man and Art,h which is now being held at the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art through January 24, 2008. For information contact Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art on 011-644-6881.
